Grab Your Suitcase

Weekend getaways and short trips: where to go, how to plan it in an evening and how to fit it all in one bag.

Plan My Getaway

Short Trips, Done Properly

A weekend away is the most useful trip there is. It fits between work weeks, it costs less than a long vacation, and it can reset your mood in a way a week of chores never will. Grab Your Suitcase is about the two-to-four-day trip: where to go, how to plan it in an evening, how to get there and how to fit everything into one bag.

Short trips punish poor planning more than long ones. On a ten-day holiday, a wasted afternoon is a footnote. On a two-night getaway it is a quarter of the fun. So the advice here is practical: choose one place and one theme, book the bed and the one or two things that sell out, and keep the rest loose. Leave on time, travel light and come home before you need a vacation from your vacation.

Plan a Weekend Getaway

A simple step-by-step for 2–4 day trips, plus how to stretch the year’s long weekends.

Beach Weekends

Barrier islands, Victorian seaside towns and Gulf sand — and when to go to dodge the crowds.

City Weekends

Walkable cities that reward 48 hours: Boston, Washington, Seattle, Chattanooga and more.

Mountain Weekends

Cabins, overlooks and trail towns in the Smokies, the Blue Ridge and beyond.

Food & History Weekends

Colonial capitals, Spanish missions, adobe plazas and the meals that go with them.

Drive, Fly & Pack Light

When the car wins, when the plane wins, and how to pack a carry-on for three days.

Pick the Kind of Weekend First

Most people start with a place. Start instead with the feeling you want on Saturday afternoon. Do you want your toes in sand and a book? Museums, a good dinner and a late walk? A trail, a view and a fire? A town full of old buildings and stories? Once you know the theme, the shortlist almost writes itself, and you stop comparing a beach town with a city break that would never have made you happy anyway.

Then apply the distance test. A weekend works best when the journey is short compared with the time on the ground. A destination you can reach by mid-morning is ideal. Anything that needs a connection or a long drive each way should become a three- or four-day trip, and the calendar of federal holidays makes that easier than most people think.

Our Local Best Of Guides

For the places our network knows best, we publish local visitor guides with things to do, restaurants and annual events. A Florida beach weekend starts with Best of Sarasota County. A capital city break starts with Best of Washington, DC. For Boston, Cape Cod, Salem and the Berkshires there is Best in Mass, and for Pike Place Market and Mount Rainier day trips there is Best of Seattle-Tacoma. Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Taos are covered by Best in New Mexico, and Oahu by Best of Honolulu. For the rest of the country, Best of the USA collects the best places and things to do state by state.

Five Rules for a Better Short Trip

  • One base, not two. Every hotel change costs half a day of checking out, driving and checking in.
  • Book the scarce things first. The room, the popular restaurant, the timed-entry attraction. Everything else can wait.
  • Leave early, come back early. Beat the Friday exodus and avoid the Sunday-evening crawl home.
  • One bag each. Carry-on only means no waiting at the carousel and no lugging bags across town.
  • Leave one block of time empty. The best part of a weekend away is often the thing you found by accident.

Why Ask a Travel Specialist for a Weekend?

Because short trips are where small mistakes cost the most. A specialist knows which hotels are actually walkable to the sights, when a holiday weekend will sell out, and whether flying is really faster once you count the airport time. You describe the weekend you want; a specialist sends back options. The quote is free, and you decide.

Weekend Getaway Questions

How far should I travel for a weekend getaway?

Far enough to feel like somewhere new, close enough that travel does not eat the trip. A good test: if getting there and back takes more than a third of your waking hours away, choose somewhere nearer or add a day.

Is a two-night trip worth it?

Yes, if you pick one base and one theme. Two nights in a single walkable town or a cabin near the trails feels like a real break. Two nights split between two hotels usually feels like moving house.

What is the best day to start a weekend trip?

Leaving Thursday evening or Friday morning beats the Friday-afternoon rush on the roads and at airports. Coming home Monday on a holiday weekend, or very early Sunday, does the same on the return.

Can a travel specialist help with a short trip?

Yes. A specialist can line up the hotel, flights or a rental car and a few booked experiences in one quote, which matters more on a short trip because there is no time to fix mistakes.
