How to Plan a Weekend Getaway

Count the hours, pick a theme, book the scarce things first and leave room to wander.

A good weekend getaway can be planned in one evening. Here is the order that works, plus a calendar of the long weekends worth grabbing.

Step by Step: Planning a 2–4 Day Trip

  • Count the real hours. Write down when you can leave and when you must be home. Subtract travel each way. What is left is your trip.
  • Choose the theme. Beach, city, mountains, food or history. One theme per short trip keeps the plan simple.
  • Shortlist three places that fit the hours you have, then pick the one with the best weather outlook and room availability.
  • Book the bed in the right spot. On a short trip, location beats square footage. Compare options on Rooms Cheap.
  • Book the one or two things that sell out — a dinner reservation, a timed ticket, a guided tour.
  • Sketch each day loosely: a morning plan, an afternoon plan and dinner. Leave gaps.
  • Check the practical things: parking at the hotel, check-in time, and whether you need reservations for parks or popular sights.

Long Weekends on the Calendar

Federal holidays turn ordinary weekends into three- and four-day trips. Five of them are fixed to Mondays by law, so they always make a long weekend. The others move around the week, and when one lands on a Thursday or a Tuesday, a single vacation day can buy you four days away.

Here is how the 2027 federal holidays fall, as published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Not every employer observes every date, so check your own calendar.

Off-Peak Weekends Are Underrated

The weekend after a holiday is often quieter than the holiday itself. Shoulder seasons — late spring and early fall at the beach, late winter in cities — bring easier reservations and calmer streets. If you have flexibility, ask a travel specialist which weekends look good for your shortlist; that one question can change the whole trip.

A Simple Weekend Budget

Set aside four buckets before you book: getting there, the bed, meals and one splurge. Short trips go over budget in small ways — parking, resort fees, one more round of drinks — so leave a little slack. When you compare hotels, compare the total for your nights, including taxes and any nightly fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book a weekend trip?

For an ordinary weekend, a few weeks is often enough. For holiday weekends, festival dates and small towns with few hotels, book as soon as you have dates. Rooms near the action go first.

What if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday?

Under the federal rule, a holiday on a Saturday is generally observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. Private employers set their own policies, so check yours.
